Text to Symbol: Exploring the Story of Jacob Wrestling
Sunday, November 22 | 9:00 AM – 10:15 AM
Family Program & Hands-On Art Project
Adults and children are invited to experience Torah through a creative lens. Beginning with a striking visual interpretation of Akeidat Yitzhak, the Binding of Isaac, by contemporary artist David Moss, participants will move from text to image as they explore Jacob’s mysterious wrestling encounter in Parashat Vayishlach. Together, families will translate Torah into colors, forms and symbols and create something of their own.

Rabbi Matthew L. Berkowitz is President of The Schechter Institutes, Inc., where he supports a pluralistic vision of Jewish education in Israel and oversees advancement for its graduate school, rabbinical seminary, TALI Education Fund, Neve Schechter arts and culture center, and Jewish communities in Ukraine. He is also co-founder of Kol Ha-Ot, a Jerusalem-based initiative exploring the connection between the arts and Jewish learning. Previously, he served as Director of Israel Programs and Senior Rabbinic Fellow at The Jewish Theological Seminary. He was ordained by JTS in 1999 and is an alumnus of the Wexner Graduate Fellowship and Hartman Rabbinic Leadership Institute.
An accomplished artist, Rabbi Berkowitz trained in Jewish scribal art in Jerusalem and has created illuminated manuscripts, ketubbot, mezuzot, tzedakah boxes and sanctuary artwork. His portfolio, Passover Landscapes: Illuminations on the Exodus, was acquired by Yale University, exhibited at Yeshiva University Museum and is on permanent display at JTS. He lives in Jerusalem with his wife, Nadia Levene, and their family.
