God calls Abram to leave home for Canaan. Along the way, Ishmael is born, and God establishes a covenant with Abram and his descendants. Abram receives the name Abraham and the commandment of circumcision.

Visitors tell Abraham that Sarah will have a son. After the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Isaac is born and Hagar and Ishmael are sent away. The portion ends with the binding of Isaac and the ram offered in his place.
