Jewish Books in Christian Bibles with Dr. Ely Levine

In-person and Zoom

Ancient Jewish literature was quite varied. What Jews decided to preserve was just a small portion; Christians preserved many, many Jewish texts. Come read through some of these Jewish texts, including the Gospels, Jubilees, and Maccabees. See what other ideas Jews had that may not have been preserved in mainstream Judaism, other ideas that seemed to find a roundabout way into normative Judaism, and still other Jewish ideas that ended up being used against Jews.

We spend a lot of time on certain parts of the Bible – chiefly, the Torah. It is time to read through the Prophets and the Writings more carefully. Join this class to read and discuss the rest of the Bible. We will move at a comfortable pace, but include some deep exploration of texts. New participants are welcome at any time!  We are working our way through the exciting and messy stories in the books of Kings.

Shifting Sands with Dr. Asaf Romirowsky

In-person and Zoom

This course challenges the popular narrative that American involvement in the Middle East is a modern phenomenon, tracing our entanglements in the region back to the Barbary Wars of the early 19th century. It’s a reexamination of the foundational stories we tell ourselves about America’s role in the region, and why getting that history right matters today.

Advanced Nusach Practicum with Cantor Randy Herman

In-person only in the Bailis Room

This class is for those who already lead weekday morning services, or would like to. We will focus on weekday morning nusach (the melodic modes of prayer chant), what is correct and what isn’t. I hear some good nusach at our weekday services, and some that is … less so. Let’s dig into this as a community, and have fun doing so. Class will be participatory.

Participants will have the opportunity to strengthen their confidence in leading weekday morning services while developing a better ear for the traditional nusach. Through guided practice, listening, and discussion, we’ll explore the patterns that give the service its distinctive sound and work through common questions and challenges. Whether you are already comfortable leading or hoping to do so in the future, this class offers a supportive setting to practice, learn from one another, and deepen your understanding of the weekday morning service.
