Our Questions – Lit Voices of Jewish American Women

Note from Instructor Meredith Goldsmith:

Hi everyone,

Thanks for a terrific first session! For October 12, we’ll discuss two Yezierska stories:

from the first session’s handout,
“Soap and Water”

and her prize-winning story,
“The Fat of the Land”.

Looking forward to seeing everyone. If questions, please let me know!

What does the 20th century Jewish American experience look like when seen from women’s perspectives? We’ll look at women’s writing from the late 19th and early 20th century and then go later into the 20th century. The aim is to introduce readers to a range of writers and perspectives on the modern Jewish American women’s experience, from a first-generation Ashkenazi immigrant to a leader in New York Sephardic society to an ex-Hasid. Authors are likely to include Anzia Yezierska, Annie Nathan Meyer, Emma Wolf, Edna Ferber, and Pearl Abraham. If these are folks you haven’t heard of, that’s precisely the point!

We will take on works in digestible chunks, looking mostly at short fiction in the fall and possibly taking on a novel or two as the chilly nights come upon us. All are welcome; no background needed.

Meredith Goldsmith earned her BA, MA, and PhD in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University and served as a professor of English for twenty years at Ursinus College. She has published numerous scholarly articles on early twentieth-century US authors, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Edith Wharton, Nella Larsen, Jessie Fauset, and Anzia Yezierska. She co-edited three scholarly collections (Middlebrow Moderns: Popular US Women Writers of the 1920s, Edith Wharton and Cosmopolitanism, and American Literary History and the Turn Toward Modernity), and served as editor of the Edith Wharton Review. Her book, which mines literary and cultural narratives to explore higher education challenges, is forthcoming from Routledge/Taylor & Francis in Fall 2026 (Guiding Academic Institutions through Crossroads and Crisis: A Literary Leadership Toolbox). While at Columbia, she spent a lot of time in the basement of Butler Library reading forgotten women writers of the early twentieth century, which led to her first scholarly collection, Middlebrow Moderns.
