Sukkot Activities and Recipes
Activities:
- Build a Sukkah or help a friend build a Sukkah
- Decorate a Sukkah
- Attend synagogue to fulfill the mitzvah of lulav and etrog
- Invite guests over every night of Sukkot as part of the custom of Ushpizin
- Take a walking tour of your neighborhood and visit other Sukkot.
Family Sukkah:
large wardrobe box, colored construction paper, white glue, Indian corn, cornstalks, leaves, branches, string, scissors, felt markers, staplers, single hole puncher, X-acto knife for parent.
- Cut “doorway” in cardboard box large enough for a child to enter. (Bottom of box should be taped shut, top of box should be fully open.)
- Place skach (leaves, branches) across top of box.
- Cut out fruits and vegetables from colored paper, Attach to string and hang from skach.
- Decorate outside of sukkah with large pieces of colored paper. Glue them to the sides of sukkah to create a “mosaic” effect
- Other decorations: paper chains (construction paper) with names of all family members on each link.

Wind Sock Decoration:
large sheets of colored construction paper, stencils, stickers, crepe paper streamers, fruit and vegetable tracers, yarn, felt markers, white glue, hole punch, stapler, scissors
- Fold construction paper in half lengthwise.
- Holding paper with fold on top, decorate the page using stickers, stencils, tracers of different fruits and vegetables. Also write, “Chag Sameach” and or “Happy Sukkot”.
- Staple on four streamers
- Staple ends of construction paper into cylinder shape
- Punch 2 holes on opposite sides of the top of the cylinder
- Thread yarn through the holes, tie and hang

Fun Foam Fruit Chain:
different colored pieces of fun foam, yarn, large needles with large eyes, scissors, tacky glue, q-tips, permanent markers
- Cut out different fruits from pieces of Fun Foam (apple, pear, orange, banana,etc.)
- Glue on fun foam leaves and stems where appropriate
- Using large needle and yarn, sew fruits loosely together so that they “hang” from the yarn
- Hang chains throughout the Sukkah

Ushpizin/Sukkot Guests:
large roll paper, scissors, crayons or markers
- Lay down on a large piece of roll paper. Another person traces his/her outline using crayons or markers.
- Use crayons or makers to color in your guest
- Cut out your completed guest and hang in on your Sukkah wall
Recipes
Chicken with Fruit:
- 3 to 3 ½ lbs. split chicken breasts
- 1 c. barbeque sauce
- Juice of one lemon
- 1 (8 oz) can small onions, drained
- 1 (16 oz) can peach halves, keep syrup
- 1 (13 ¼ oz) can pineapple chunks, keep syrup
Season chicken and bake in 350 degree oven, uncovered, in greased baking dish for 30 minutes. Combine barbeque sauce, lemon juice and reserved syrup from the peaches. Pour over chicken and bake another half hour. Add peaches, pineapple, onions, and a small amount of pineapple juice to casserole. Bake uncovered 30 minutes. Baste occasionally during cooking.
Spinach Kugel – dairy or parve:
- 3 eggs, well beaten
- 1 pkg. dry kosher onion soup mix
- 1 (10 oz) pkg of frozen spinach, drained 1 c. non-dairy creamer
- ½ lb. kluski noodles, cooked and drained ¼ lb. melted margarine
Combine eggs, onion soup mix, non-dairy creamer and margarine in blender. Pour onto hot noodles, mixing well. Add spinach. Mix well. Put into 8 x 8 inch square pan and bake for one hour at 350 degrees. Can be baked, then frozen and reheated.
Apple Cake – parve:
- 3 eggs
- 1 ½ c. sugar
- ¾ c. oil
- ½ c. orange juice
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 ½ c. flour
- 3 tsp. baking powder
- pinch of salt
- 4 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
Mix by hand in large bowl. Cream eggs and sugar first, then add remainder of ingredients, except apples. Mix as you add each ingredient. Spread thin layer of batter on bottom of greased 9 x 13 pan. Cover with apples, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Cover with remaining batter, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Bake in 350 degree oven for 55 minutes. A 10 inch tube pan works well with the recipe.
