Rabbi Nogah Marshall, Educational Director
The Jane Fishman Grinberg Religious School
"As a Rabbi and Educational Director my passion is to share my love of Judaism with my students. When I hear that my students are singing the Tefillot that they are learning in school at home, want to attend Shabbat services, or begin lighting Shabbat candles Friday evening, I know that I made a difference and my passion and love of Judaism are being passed on to the next generation."
Although Rabbi Nogah Marshall grew up in Syracuse, New York, as the eldest of five children born to Rabbi Charles and Leah Sherman, her family's roots stem back to Har Zion Temple. While both her parents were born and raised in Philadelphia, her mother actually grew up at Har Zion Temple. Her parents were also married here. Moving to Penn Valley truly brought her full circle and in a way, brought her home.
Now, with her husband Scott, they will raise their family as a third generation Har Zion Temple family. While attending Brandeis University, Rabbi Marshall was a member of the swim team, and violinist in the orchestra, as well as a member of the traveling Israeli dance troupe B'yachad. She loves to travel and has a strong passion and love for the State of Israel. And one of her hidden talents is juggling!
Rabbi Marshall's brother Eyal, a quadriplegic and dependent on a ventilator, has truly been her hero. As a talented painter with his mouth and a graduate of Syracuse University, Eyal has taught Rabbi Marshall the importance of life and how everyone, despite one's limitations, deserves to live his or her ife to the fullest. And because of Eyal Rabbi Marshall has dedicated much of her life to working with the special needs community. This year her dedication to the Madregot (special needs) program was instrumental to receiving the Solomon Schechter Gold Award for Inclusion of Individuals with Disabilities.
One of Rabbi Marshall's favorite quotes is from George Bernard Shaw, "You see things and say why, but I dream things and say why not."
Debbie Folz, Director
The Noreen Cook Center for Early Childhood Education
Har Zion Day Camp
"My passion is early childhood education. While home is where a child's Jewish education begins, the synagogue's preschool and camp expands that education and enriches the practices at home. Enrollment is the opportune moment in the lifetime of a family to engage the synagogue community. This sense of community develops joy, comfort, and a sense of belonging. And what I want most is for that sense of belonging to be centered around Har Zion Temple."
Debbie Folz, that is my name,
Working at Har Zion is my claim to fame.
Twenty-six years ago, to the Har Zion community I came,
And my life has never been the same.
First teacher, and then there were other jobs I did enter,
Like the Director of both the Day Camp and
The Noreen Cook Center!
Growing up in New York, my dad played professional basketball,
For the SPHA's and the Knicks - yes, he was very tall!
My childhood sweetheart, Bob, I married 34 years ago,
His car service can take you anywhere you want to go.
We have two wonderful grown children, Rebecca and Scott,
And they will tell you - we dine out a lot!
If not at Har Zion, traveling is what Bob and I like to do,
By plane, train, car or cruise, we would go to Timbuktu.
But coming home is what I like best,
And to me, I feel truly blessed.
For I know there are two homes for me,
One at Har Zion and the other with my family!
